First Tuesday in November in Oz is Melbourne Cup Day.
It is the most prestigious horse race in the racing calendar.
It's called the Race that stops a nation.
Which is fairly accurate, there are parties, and most people try to get to a television at 3 p.m to watch the race.
Bella was glued to the television.
(Of course, she likes Sylvester and Tweetie, too.)
This year's race was won by Prince of Penzance ,
a 100 to 1 chance ridden by the only
female jockey in a field of 24 horses.
(Sheesh, sounds a bit like National Velvet.)
Michelle Payne was congratulated in the winner's circle
by the horse's strapper, her brother who has Down Syndrome.
It was a history making event.
(SHE is the kiss of death to any team or horse SHE supports, SHE may write to Horse Owners, in future, asking for payment NOT to bet on their horses.)

Your Melbourne Cup is like our Kentucky Derby. Mom will sit in front of the TV for a couple of hours just to see the one minute race!
ReplyDeleteLove ya lots♥

Congrats to Michelle Payne!!! I wish I had seen the race together with you. My momma placed a bet once as she bought cigarettes in our bar. She just picked a horse because the name sounded funny. And her horse won the race. Sadly the win turned into shoes immediately :o(
ReplyDeleteBELLA YOU ARE CHANNELING YOUR INNER HORSE I SEE. That looks like a most exciting event. OMDs tell HER my mom is the kiss of death for any new cafe or tv show too. As soon as she says out loud she likes it .....it disappears
ReplyDeleteHugs madi your bfff
Woo hoo - go girl go girl !!! How awesome is that that a girl jockey won. Mom says she was lucky enough to go twice to the Melbourne Cup and no she never won - but then again she didn't bet either which is probably why she didn't win :) she did love seeing all the funny outfits :)
ReplyDeleteYou look so cute watching that horse run, gussie does the same thing with cats, but cats don't win big money usually around here. Good job to Michelle Payne.

Hope you enjoyed your Melbourne Cup Bella!

There's a strategy for horse betting. Always put money on the horse that will finish first. Now you have a whole year to wait until you test that piece of advice.
ReplyDeleteDid you get more pumpkin snacks while you watched?
ReplyDeleteIs there any shouting and barking in the room?
ReplyDeleteYour Pals,
Murphy & Stanley
Mr Bailey would be barking his head off!!! Congrats to the winner that is exciting!!!

Gail says its great that a woman won, but I say what's the big deal?
ReplyDeleteToodle pip!
Bertie.
I've had dogs that lobed watching tv but the current pack isn't much into it, except barking at certain noises. I think political candidates might be convinced to pay me not to support them. My record is spotty.
ReplyDeleteDat sure a pawsome a woman jockey won!
ReplyDeleteCongrats to the Prince of Penzance - and what a great win for Ms. Payne - so touching to read about her loving brother.
