Extra protection

A few followers commented  about not knowing that dogs need sunscreen, so we thought we'd explain.

Australia has the dubious honour of having the highest incidence of skin cancer in the world.
We were surprised when our cousin who visited recently, kept saying 'yer alls (she talks like that)..yer alls sun is so strong.'  She was here in winter AND she's from San Antonio Texas, so we thought her sun would be just as strong....  Anyway...

We scotties are black and have VERY thick fur.  We get hot easily and don't generally lie in the sun.

But Roxy is mostly white and has a thin coat.  She also has pink, nearly bald, patches especially on her nose and around her eye.
She also loves to lie in the sun....
So she has to have sunscreen to protect her.  At first we did try human zinc, but the Vet said that she might lick it off and get zinc poisoning.  We have a special dog sunscreen now.

We've discovered that dirt adheres to the sunscreen.....
So Roxy is getting an extra layer protection.....BOL!

  9. I stay out of the sun but Kenzie loves to bake. August in Arizona can really do it.

  12. Always best to be safe. Dakota had a liver-colored nose and Ciara does too. Mom should probably get her some of that sunscreen too. The sun here this summer has been brutal.

    Good PSA.

  14. How very interesting. Thanks for the explanation. I am having difficulty imagining sun that strong, but Gail has been to Perth, WA, where her pale, freckly Scottish skin burned in about ten minutes, so she quite understands why Roxy needs extra protection.

  17. Glad to hear you've got Roxy covered. I think we're going to have to do the same for Floyd, he has a pink patch on his nose, and pink lips, and like a typical boxer, he loves to sun bake.

My human knew a cat that got sun cancer on her white ears and had to have them snipped off, poor thing...

It's important to be sun safe!

  18. scotsmad....
Some canines can get skin cancer.... I read that fact somewhere. Dogs with short fur, such as the Dalmatian, need sunscreen. At least that is what I have read!! ;op

  19. Well, it might not be the most pleasant to wear sunscreen, even for the humans, but thank dog you started doing that before anything... um... grew on her lovely pink skin!

  23. Yes, sunscreen is so important for some of us. Morgan and Fudge both have light colored noses so they need it when they're outside for any length of time. Norma Jean doesn't have any dark pigment around one eye. We can't use sunscreen that close to her eye, so Mom leaves he bangs long to protect her pink skin. That's why you can never see Norma Jean's eyes in pictures.
