Daisy's Mouth....

If you are squeamish, you might want to stop here.

Daisy, 22nd November 2013

It started with Daisy's teeth being slightly out of alignment.

31 December 2013

She visited the Vet , was diagnosed with a growth and booked in to have a  biopsy taken, removal of front lower teeth and general dental work.  Her other teeth were fine.

6th January 2014
The biopsy report stated a Squamous Cell Carcinoma was growing into the jaw bone, and would progress.
Prognosis, 6-12 months.
But it was very aggressive.

19th February 2014
At no time did she indicate that there was anything wrong.  No evidence of pain.  It would bleed when she tried to get food off the floor, but  stop quickly.
It didn't interfere with her usual daily duties or fun.
3rd January 2014
She went to the river on Thursday, did her usual wading, running around chasing birds, and exploring.
Friday morning was another Vet visit to see how things were going as she gave no clue as to what was happening.

The Vet went through her records and explained that she would be experiencing at least dull aches in her jaw and teeth, the tumour was ulcerated and would be VERY painful within a week...getting worse, and there was also a chance
that the jaw bone could fracture.
The decision was made.
Very difficult because she seemed to be still happy
 and enjoying life.

We want to thank everyone for your words of support and best wishes.  It has been a difficult two days.  Daisy is in our garden next to Carys.  Kendra's urn is buried with her.
We will miss our STOIC girl for a long time.

Oh, alternatives would have been having the jawbone removed and replaced, chemo and/radiation in Sydney.  She would have hated it.

You did the best thing letting her go.
My Amber had oral cancer and hers followed the the same course but her tumour was in a different place. Diagnosed November 2011 and we said goodbye January 2012.
My thoughts are with you at this very sad time.
Maybe Amber will find Daisy and they will run free together xx

  7. Thank you for the background on Daisy. No pain. That's the simplicity of our covenant with them. She could not have asked for a more loving owner and friend who was ready to take the hard decision when the time came.

  12. I've been thinking a lot about you the past couple of days. Last evening I read many of the kind words left on your last post, and those same kind, caring thoughts are here with this one, and I know many more will follow mine. These decisions are the hardest to make. When I've personally made them, they can be filled with doubt and guilt afterwards, and I don't know if you are feeling those things or not, but if so, please don't for a moment let yourself feel that way. Remember always that your decision to let Daisy go was truly an unselfish one, made from your great love for her. You spared Daisy the pain and what was to come and it was the last, kindest and most compassionate gift you could give to her. Daisy was lucky, she had a full, fun and wonderful, wonderful life to the very end, because of you, and that is another gift! And Tobi, you have those memories of Daisy that can never, ever be taken away. Find peace and comfort in that, and know that from my corner of Loudoun county, I am thinking of you during what I know is a sad time.

  13. Have no doubt - you made the right decision. No-one knew Daisy like you did and no-one loved her much as you do and the fact that you loved her enough to let her go proves that. Like many others I have had dogs since I was 5 years old and through the years have also had to make such decisions and no doubt will again. It never gets any easier. The greatest gift we can give our furbabies is to put their needs and letting them go above those of our needs to keep them around even a few hours, days or weeks longer. Big hugs and snuffles from the boys.

  14. The bravery of dogs. Our Loki never really showed how sick he was either. It is amazing the strength they have. We know you made the right decision. Daisy was lucky to have a family who wouldn't let her suffer needlessly.

I heard the mother of a Canadian skier, Sandra Burke, who died in training accident 2 years ago say the most wonderful thing - and I am paraphrasing a bit her - "I thought as a parent the worst thing that could happen to me would be to lose a child. I was wrong. The worst thing that could have happened to me would to have never had her." I think all we pet owners can attest to the truth in this.

    Hugs!

  18. Making her suffer through chemo and/or radiation were not options. He had a friend who had lung cancer and was undergoing radiation. It was extremely painful. While waiting for his treatment, he talked to a woman in the waiting room who said childbirth was easy compared to radiation treatments. Some are more affected than others, but the friend didn't make it and suffered for no reason.

  20. We are so very sorry that the tumor grew so fast and she had to leave you way to soon. Thanks for sharing the pictures as it will help our parents/guardians know what to look for in between vet visits. The teeth misalignment seemed like such a small thing, we are sure many pet parents might not realize it indicated something wrong and in need of a vet visit.

Purrs of comfort and sympathy and paws of love. Your Sweet Daisy will be missed by all of us.

  21. When the alternatives don't make sense, you do what you have to do to keep your beloved furry from suffering - we applaud your courage in doing the right thing for Daisy. We know that we have to face the same decision with Phantom at some point too.

We are sure that Kendra is happy to be reunited with Daisy.

  27. Thank you for sharing Daisy's prognosis as it can teach others how this disease progresses. It had to be very painful to type each word. The love for Daisy shines through and we all grieve with you. I know I am a better pet person from knowing Daisy and her daily endeavors. Her travels to the river always made me smile and I am so glad she was able to continue that fun until the end. May God bless you and your furkids.

  33. I've been reading Daisy's blog for ages but never commented before. It's been such a joy to follow the story of her wonderfully happy life. I'm in awe of your bravery in making the decision you did at the vets on Friday, a bravery that can only come from your deep, deep love for your gorgeous Daisy, but at the same time that love is the very thing that makes us want to keep them with us.

We have a 13 year old Cairn terrier that we love to bits. He was a rescue from a situation of neglect and that makes us love him all the more. I see the cloud of old age starting to descend and I pray for a fraction of your bravery, if decisions start needing to be made.

BTW, we also have a Westie whose kennel name is Hemskirk. I wonder if they came from the same place.

  63. We know all too well about making those hard decisions. When Tsar had his brain tumor, we were given the option of tests that he would have hated and treatments of surgery and chemo. Tsar would not have wanted any of that. He always lived life on his own terms and we wanted his death to be dignified as he was.
