As you may or may not know, bunnies in Australia are feral. They were introduced for hunting purposes....sport and food. Well, they took over the continent causing major damage to the environment: eating the grass and plants needed by domestic and native animals as well. There was also loss of plant species which led to erosion.
As a result some native animals became extinct or endangered, including this little fellow.......
.......the bilby.
Well, the Bilby is fighting back! At Easter, if you buy chocolate bilbies, a donation is made by the chocolate makers to help save the bilbies.
So we're doing our part--even though we can't eat the chocolate.

BUT we'll be hoping the EASTER BILBY visits us with some eggs......and other treats.....and maybe bones.....or lamb shanks...
We hope you have a very Happy Easter (if you celebrate it) or a Happy Weekend.
My mum saw some real alive bilbys in a wildlife park enclosure last December - she said they are really cute - I don't mind what brings me my easter treats....as long as I get some!! Tail Wuggles, Rubie.
ReplyDeleteMy Fergus once found my Easter Bilby (which was hidden in the garden) he eatted the ears right off it! Silly Scottie!
ReplyDeleteSadly, bunnies are feral by nature. Bilbys by contrast look deserving of Bella,Kendra and Daisys support !
ReplyDeleteHappy Easter to you too!! We'd do our best to get rid of some bunnies, if our Mom would only let us chase them!!

Daisy and Co., I knew about the bunnies but not about the bilby -- and I work at the San Diego Zoo! As the mom of two Cardigan Welsh Corgis, I have to say that any creature with ears like that has got to be OK!
ReplyDeleteThat billy kinda looks like if a bunny and a mouse had a baby together. I wish we could by Easter bilbys here.....too cute
ReplyDeletePut me down for a Bilby or two would you? I'd love to gnaw on one of those. No wait.. it's chocolate. Thanks for the education.
