Australia has the dubious honour of having the highest incidence of skin cancer in the world.
We were surprised when our cousin who visited recently, kept saying 'yer alls (she talks like that)..yer alls sun is so strong.' She was here in winter AND she's from San Antonio Texas, so we thought her sun would be just as strong.... Anyway...
We scotties are black and have VERY thick fur. We get hot easily and don't generally lie in the sun.
But Roxy is mostly white and has a thin coat. She also has pink, nearly bald, patches especially on her nose and around her eye.
She also loves to lie in the sun....
So she has to have sunscreen to protect her. At first we did try human zinc, but the Vet said that she might lick it off and get zinc poisoning. We have a special dog sunscreen now.
We've discovered that dirt adheres to the sunscreen.....
So Roxy is getting an extra layer protection.....BOL!
OH YES... that Sunscreen stuffs DOES attract Dirt.. Of COURSE it would NOT be caused by any of Roxy's Excavations... BaaaaWaaaaah
ReplyDeleteHey girrrrls... I have you down fur the 1-2-1 Treats to Dog Correspondence... THAT will be GRRRRREAT. VERY informative and MOST needed..Judging from what all our furends are saying about how STINGY/UNEDUCATED their peeps are, where this is concerned.
wow you must have strong sun if a Texan thought it was strong...I didn't know they made sunscreen for pooches...I learned something new today...
ReplyDeleteI like the dirt shield. Maybe anything that is sticky will do.

Oh, extra dirt shield is very good! I didn't know they made doggie sunscreen ~ that is good to hear. You keep covered there Roxy!
ReplyDeleteKisses,
Ruby
I didn't know that, but Alaska was the same way in the summer. I bet Roxy doesn't mind that extra layer of eye protection! :-)
ReplyDeleteThis is good to know! Thank you for telling us!
ReplyDeleteRoxy looks cute with her dirty nose.
ReplyDeleteCindy
I stay out of the sun but Kenzie loves to bake. August in Arizona can really do it.
ReplyDeleteGlad you're covered!
ReplyDeleteNola
Roxy is like elephants---they throw dirt on themselves to protect them from the sun!
ReplyDeleteGreat reminder and information here! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteAlways best to be safe. Dakota had a liver-colored nose and Ciara does too. Mom should probably get her some of that sunscreen too. The sun here this summer has been brutal.
ReplyDeleteGood PSA.

my Lily's nose gets sunburned sometimes
ReplyDeleteBenny & Lily
How very interesting. Thanks for the explanation. I am having difficulty imagining sun that strong, but Gail has been to Perth, WA, where her pale, freckly Scottish skin burned in about ten minutes, so she quite understands why Roxy needs extra protection.
ReplyDeleteToodle pip!
Bertie.
I didn't know that, but I am glad that they have doggy sunscreen so you can be protected.
ReplyDeleteLoveys Sasha
Good for you, Roxy. You gotta take good care of yourself!
ReplyDeleteLove ya lots,
Mitch and Molly
Glad to hear you've got Roxy covered. I think we're going to have to do the same for Floyd, he has a pink patch on his nose, and pink lips, and like a typical boxer, he loves to sun bake.
ReplyDeleteMy human knew a cat that got sun cancer on her white ears and had to have them snipped off, poor thing...
It's important to be sun safe!
scotsmad....
ReplyDeleteSome canines can get skin cancer.... I read that fact somewhere. Dogs with short fur, such as the Dalmatian, need sunscreen. At least that is what I have read!! ;op
Love, Raelyn.... And Rose, my BEAUTIFULLY UNIQUE "Mystery Dog"!!
Well, it might not be the most pleasant to wear sunscreen, even for the humans, but thank dog you started doing that before anything... um... grew on her lovely pink skin!
ReplyDeleteStay cool and protected in the sun,
Joules & Prescott & mama Amie
yep, national taco day Oct 4th. It will be announced on my blog in the next couple days so get ready to Taco!!

Aw, so cute! And protected too!

Dirt and sunscreen go well together:)
ReplyDeleteYes, sunscreen is so important for some of us. Morgan and Fudge both have light colored noses so they need it when they're outside for any length of time. Norma Jean doesn't have any dark pigment around one eye. We can't use sunscreen that close to her eye, so Mom leaves he bangs long to protect her pink skin. That's why you can never see Norma Jean's eyes in pictures.
