Compromising

Whenever we went walking, SHE tried to get us to sit when people were approaching, or when we came to a road crossing.
As we are already so close to the ground, we just didn't see the point of lowering our back ends a couple of centimetres.

After us ignoring HER and refusing to sit......embarrassing HER in front of strangers, we came to a compromise.  SHE says 'Stand', and we freeze until SHE says 'okay'--even when we are off lead.
I, Daisy, am so good that I don't move when cyclists go around me.
Now people say how well behaved we are and we are all happy.
Of course, if SHE has a treat, we sit beautifully and quickly.

  1. Awww!!! I don't get it :(

And you are such amazing walking buddies. I am sure the treat would have made a really massive difference.

  3. LOL Took me a minute and then I got it...87 Lowload is perfect for Frankie & Ernie...Momz uses the word "wait" and I've got that one done really good...she doesn't make me sit as long as I stay put

  4. I like to stand still and pretend to be obedient until the last possible moment when I go for the snooter in the butt move of the passing pedestrian. Momma squeals with delight (and it hurries along Mr. or Ms. jogger).

  5. I think this is an excellent and reasonable compromise. Well done.

  6. That is the thing..when you are low to the ground it is hard to tell if you are sitting anyway Mom always gives us the "wait" command and we freeze on the spot.

  9. I'm surprised you don't sit down when told to stand.

  11. Our Mom is trying to teach us to stand and stay. As soon as she walks away we like to sit and rest but she gets all upset. Stand-stay is one f the moves in our Rally program and it seems like a waste of energy to us.

  12. Barharhar, you guys are to easy. We won't do anything they says, well maybe after like 87 times telling us, WHY, cause it's fun!

  13. We are still working on the being calm when other people are around. Walter can't sit still for more than 2 seconds.

  14. Funny, Gail tells me that Hamish the Westie, who was a not dissimilar shape to you Scottie girls, also hated to sit. It never occurred to her that he might have thought it pointless as he was that close to the ground anyway. Me, I love to sit, and will do it when and where you please. Oh, but I do remember that it was impossible for the untrained eye to tell where or not Daisy Dachshund at puppy class was sitting, she was such a 'low load' to begin with.
    Toodle pip!

  18. What is she trying to do by getting you to sit? You can't work for free, there MUST be a pay off! You need to teach her to carry little treats, maybe steak with her at all times!

  21. That's a great compromise! I bet that people think you're super well behaved because most dogs won't freeze like you do!

  22. I'd sit, stand or freeze for a treat, especially if it was a really good one! :-)

  23. Ha - we have to sit at every intersection and when the bikers or joggers or walkers come by us. BUT if there is someone approaching with a dog, what does the Momster do???? She crosses the street:(

  25. HA! This is the best post on the topic! I agree, it is kind of silly to sit. I'm all for the standing freeze, too. It just makes sense.

  27. Ah, yes, treats are like magic! We'll dance to the moon if a treat is involved!

  28. I'm still trying to teach mom that it's my protective duty as her furkid to bark and warn other strange people away! She still insists on trying to get me to shush and sit, though. Maybe one day we can reach a compromise like yours!

  29. We will remember the "stand" command. I think Zippy will like that one!

  30. Good job on the compromise..., y'all are slowing getting your mum trained.

  31. I think that it was a good compromise!! I sit for treats too.

  32. The reason people choose to use "sit" or "down" as a command is simply because the dog is less likely to break the command. Down is better than Sit, and Sit is better than Stand.

That being said, if your dog responds better to "stand" then that would be the best command to use! Very good choice in my opinion.

  34. Glad to hear your mom was open to compromise! Wrigs says sometimes it's hard to sit when there are so many distractions. :-)
