More trivia from your CFATDU...
As it is Tasty Tuesday, we thought we'd tell you a couple of useless facts about the Australian Hamburger.
If your parents orfriends visit Australia and go to a hot food shop, Milk Bar (nearing extinction) or Fish & Chip shop, they might want to order a hamburger.
We're NOT talking McDonald's or other chain hamburger places.
As they bite into it, they may notice an unusual taste....usually followed by 'What's in this thing?'
That would be.......sliced...
It's usually sliced, this was the only picture we could find. |
Beetroot!
Pickled, of course.
Though many true-blue Aussies will discard the pickle found in fast-food hamburgers, the beetroot holds an iconic standing in Australia.
If visitors are feeling adventurous, they may wish to go 'all the way' and order
a hamburger 'with the lot'.
This burger has, a beef patty, lettuce, tomato, bacon, cheese, pineapple, a fried egg and of course the beetroot!
You can have a choice of tomato, bbq or steak sauce...mustard isn't usually a choice.
If one is still feeling peckish, order a few potato scallops.
Ignore the Dim Sims in the background |
Potato scallops are sort of a mashed potato thingy dipped in batter and deep fried. Salt is optional.
'Get-it-in-to-ya' (Aussie for 'Bon Appetit')
Can you feel your arteries hardening?
But no horsemeat one hopes....
ReplyDeleteThat's great. Extra vegetable points on a burger. You got that one right. Maybe we should import it here. Or not. I fear Americans are not big beet eaters.
ReplyDeleteKisses,
Dexter
Wow that burger looks wonderful. Mind you sore point over here with the horse meat scandal which is getting worse. Burger King have been caught out. We don't eat processed food so we are OK but we find the whole thing awful. Love the idea of beetroot. You either love it or hate it. Have a terrific Tuesday.
ReplyDeleteBest wishes Molly
Gee thanks....now you have made mom crave a real Aussie burger. You know she spent years trying to make Aussie meat pies over here ..wondering why they never tasted right. She eventually realized it was the meat..it tastes different in the USA. So do burgers....for the same reason. That was the first thing mom did last year went they went home....a Villies meat pie...she was in heaven
ReplyDeleteMom says she thinks she may be Australian - she loves beetroot & thinks that beetroot on a burger is a grrrreat idea!
ReplyDeleteWally & Sammy
What a whole load of exciting stuff going on at your end!! Mummy is quite intrigued by that beetroot and pineapple burger! But we can't imagine why anyone would want to put anything other than ham into a burger. After all it's called 'HAMBURGER'!
ReplyDeleteWhy are all the milk joints almost extinct?
WOW!Roxy, GREAT job there with the bird.We have been trying to catch pigeons but someone always shoos them away or they just fly away on their own.Mummy's glad that it flew away , your bird we mean.
What a cute lil lab pup. It must have been terribly lonely and wanted to come play with you. Hopefully it's not lost.
Wags, Gin,Bud n Shadow

Your bones, Can we please come help with your bones? Do not know why that didn't get published. Isn't that the most important part?
ReplyDeleteBetter beet root than horse meat!

ReplyDeleteMomz sez this has to be one of the strangest burgers she's ever seen...not to say it's bad (except maybe for the pineapple) & she would definitely try one...Wondering what a 'milk bar' is...must google that one...We both think the potato scallops sound great...fattening but great :)

I would have to toss the beet! That looks very interesting and yes, artery clogging but I bet it is deeelicious!!!
ReplyDeleteI think I love Australia. Pickled beets on a burger. Loved pickled beets. I would have my burger loaded except for the egg. Eggs are breakfast food. Do you have kangaroo burgers or are they just telling us that in the States? I think I love you.

ReplyDeleteYours,
That is one huge burger. My mom says she wouldn't like the beetroot on her burger, but I will try anything once.
ReplyDeleteMillie
Mom says we'd have to go with her and eat the fried egg and the beets. We're ready, when do we leave?
ReplyDeleteMorgan, Sebastian, the Porties, Syd and Mac
This makes me hungry. Be right over gals!
ReplyDeleteMmmm.... You're making me and my peep drool!
ReplyDeleteShe loves a good hamburger and any good one HAS to have beetroot and pineapple! Can you believe that our local Chip shop, has pineapple as an EXTRA... pft. No pineapple and it's not a proper burger in our opinion!
But, it is definitely a sometimes food! (especially when you order "the lot")
BOL!
Ooooo...beetroot is delicious!! I'd never have thought to shove it on a burger, but...why not!? ;-) I have to say "no" on the pineapple though! Have a yummy time!
ReplyDeleteBOL that's just weird!
ReplyDeleteNola

ReplyDeleteWow! That is some burger! We would have no problem eating any of these fine foods!
ReplyDeleteLove ya lots,
Mitch and Molly
Hmmm....pickled beets on a burger? Ya, I could get into that. I might have to try that but on a homemade vegan burger of course!
ReplyDeleteOur Mom says she'd rather have a beet than an egg on her burger, but we all vote for the egg, paws down!!
ReplyDeleteXOXO
Lilly, Piper, Celti and Ivy
Hi girls..... we are way behind with readin' blogs as usual! Mum just wanted to say she hates pickled beets and will pick them off her burger (or order it without) and the best fish and chip shops don't mash the potato for their scallops - just deep fry a nice fat slice of potato - uuummmmm!! I think it's all good!
